The new Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system the OPP is using is paying dividends in Chatham-Kent for the OPP.

Then again, so are their radar guns.

Over the past week, the ALPR system pinged on a couple of occasions, leading to charges.

The first came on July 11 shortly before 1 a.m.

An officer stopped a passenger vehicle on River Line after receiving a notification from the system of an expired vehicle permit.

As a result of the investigation, a 40-year-old of Thamesville was charged with:

  • Use plate not authorized for vehicle
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Fail to surrender insurance card
  • Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle.

The ALPR system pinged for an officer a day later.

At approximately 3:10 a.m., the officer stopped a vehicle on Communication Road.

As a result of the investigation, a 31-year-old of Chatham was charged with:

  • Driving while under suspension (two counts)
  • Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit
  • Class G1 licence holder – drive at unlawful hour.

A Sarnia driver faces stunt-driving charges following a July 11 trip along St. Clair Road in Chatham-Kent.

Police say an officer pulled over the driver after clocking his vehicle doing more than 55 km/h over the posted speed limit.

As a result of the investigation, a 19-year-old of Sarnia was charged with stunt driving.

A Windsor driver faces charges after getting nabbed for speeding shortly after midnight on July 13.

Police say the westbound vehicle was doing more than 40 km/h over the speed limit on Highway 401.

As a result of the investigation, a 28-year-old of Windsor was charged with:

  • Speeding 1-49 Km/h over the posted limit
  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance
  • Use plate not authorized for vehicle
  • Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle
  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available.

A day later, another ticket. The OPP pulled over a westbound vehicle on the 401 that was doing more than 55 km/h over the posted speed limit.

A 23-year-old of Windsor was charged with stunt driving.

Another Windsor driver with an allegedly heavy foot got stopped July 15 as well.

Police say this person was doing in excess of 60 km/h over the limit on the westbound 401.

As a result, a 20-year-old Windsor driver faces stunt-driving charges.
