A man is in hospital with serious injuries and the province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a Chatham-Kent police officer opened fire Sunday night in Tilbury.

According to Chatham-Kent police, the incident took place shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday.

SIU officials say the caller stated a man armed with guns would be at the intersection of Laurentia Drive and Rose Avenue in Tilbury.

Officers arrived and saw a man with a crowbar outside his residence on Laurentia Drive.

At least one officer attempted to use a Taser on the man, according to the SIU, but it didn’t subdue the man.

At that time, the SIU reports, a C-K officer discharged his firearm.

Officers administered first aid to the man until paramedics arrived.

A 62-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Four investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case by the SIU.

Investigators are canvassing the area and appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them. Contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
