Man threatens family with knife, pipe bomb

A Rodney man faces domestic and weapons-related charges after someone threatened people with a knife and then claimed to have a pipe bomb in their possession last night in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent police learned that around 7 p.m. the man attended the area where a woman and her adult son live, even though he was on conditions not to communicate with the son or be within 100 metres of him.

The man threatened the son, while in possession of a knife, as the son was preventing the man from continuing to harass his mother, according to police.

A second man was also threatened as the man was asked to leave the area.

Police say the man returned shortly after 9 p.m. in possession of a suspected pipe bomb and threatened to blow up the neighbourhood. The son was able to take possession of the suspected explosive device as the man fled the scene in his vehicle.

The explosive device was secured by police and determined not to be a threat or safety concern.

A 60-year-old Rodney man was located shortly after 4 a.m. this morning and taken into custody. He has been charged with numerous domestic and weapon related offences. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

A 34-year-old Wallaceburg man was arrested and charged with two counts of failing to comply with his release conditions. He was remanded into custody pending a bail hearing.
