A desperate attempt to flee police in Wallaceburg came to a wet ending early this morning.
Police say just before 1 a.m., an officer noticed a man riding a bicycle on James Street, travelling in the wrong direction on the one-way street, wearing dark clothing, having no light on his bike and sporting a backpack.
As the officer approached the man near McNaughton Avenue, police say the suspect fled through a park and under a bridge before eventually dumping the bike and continuing his flight on foot.
He then had the bright idea of jumping into the Sydenham River to swim away from the officer, police said. That lasted until he was about halfway across the river when he tired. Police say he had to be rescued by the Chatham-Kent Fire Department.
Police took the man into custody and transported him to Sydenham District Hospital as a precaution.
It turns out, according to police, the man was under release conditions from last month, which included a nightly curfew.
A 21-year-old Wallaceburg man is charged with failing to comply.
