Staff at the Shoppers Drug Mart on St. Clair Street in Chatham stopped a shoplifter Monday afternoon.

Police say about 4:30 p.m. a man tried to walk out of the store with a Sonicare toothbrush and ice cream in a shopping bag. He walked past the cashiers, making no attempt to pay, but was confronted at the exit by an employee, who retrieved the stolen items, which were out of their packaging, according to police. Total value of the theft was approximately $200.

The man fled on foot, and officers were given a physical description of the suspect.

Police say they found the man at the corner of St. Clair and McNaughton Avenue.

A 35-year-old man of no fixed address is charged with theft and possession of property obtained by crime.
