John McGregor drama students will perform their Sears Drama Festival entry April 3 at the secondary school before competing a week later in the Sears regionals.

The play, “Phoenix,” is set after a nuclear war ravaged the Earth. God is trying to determine if the people are worth saving, since we pushed the button.

The play is a musical, written by the students.

Showtime April 3 is 7 p.m. in the Larry Lahey Athletic Centre at the school. Admission is by monetary donation. Proceeds will go towards the expenses of getting the show to Hamilton for regionals, and for another JMSS performance, the anti-bullying “Roar,” to Kitchener in May.

“Roar” was also performed at the Sears Drama Festival in Chatham in late February, but was a non-competitive entry. It still turned heads.

Representatives of the Southern Ontario Youth Theatre Festival saw it and invited the cast and crew to put it on at the festival, May 24-25 in Kitchener.

The festival is a celebration and appreciation of innovative and collaborative youth theatre.

“Roar” isn’t the only local play that will appear at the youth theatre festival. Chatham-Kent Secondary School’s “The Network,” a play about cyber bullying, will also be performed.
