It’s Paczki-mania today in Chatham-Kent, as Fat Tuesday is upon us. I walked into Maple City Bakery this morning to pick up a dozen of the mega-pastries for the office. The lineup was out the door.
Two local radio stations had live remotes set up at the Grand Avenue landmark. A gentleman playing an accordion entertained the crowd, and even had one elderly couple up and dancing.

Maple City staff made upwards of 55,000 paczkis, and they were flying out the doors.
There was even a table set up outside to handle anyone who didn’t want to wait in line. But the cold temperatures this morning essentially drove everyone, except the two chilled salespeople, indoors.
I bought a dozen to bring to The Chatham Voice office, only to find a happy reader had left another dozen waiting outside our door. We think the gift was from “I Hate Winter” contest winner Janice Lally, but are still awaiting confirmation. The evidence, as you can see below, is telling.
We didn’t order any prune paczkis, but I did see one gentleman pay for three dozen of them. He must be a regular…
Voice staff attacked the paczkis with wanton abandon about 9 a.m. We expect the sugar coma to kick in about 9:45 a.m.
