With Environment Canada predicting as much as 20 centimetres of snow for Chatham-Kent today and tonight, the municipality has issued a snow emergency.

As a result, there is a 72-hour ban on parking vehicles on municipal streets and roads to allow snow plows to better clear the snow. The ban begins at 3 p.m. today (Sunday), when the worst of the snow is supposed to begin.

The emergency is set to lift at 3 p.m. Jan. 8.

“We are asking motorists to make every effort to move their vehicles off the streets so that the plows can clear the roads more effectively,” director of Public Works Wayne Pollock said in a release. “We recognize that this is an inconvenience, but there are no other options. Emergency vehicles, citizens and local businesses all depend on these streets being cleared as quickly as possible. The order will be rescinded as soon as road conditions warrant it to limit the inconvenience to residents.”

On the heels of today’s snowfall, we’ll see a steep drop in temperatures Tuesday. By afternoon, the mercury will dip to -19C, with windchills potentially hitting -40C.

The high winds will cause blowing snow, and driving conditions could be treacherous in parts of the municipality.
