Environmentally friendly Chatham-area residents can help clean up their community and re-green a local school by recycling their old tires, batteries or motor oil for free Oct. 15-31.

For the third year straight year, CAA South Central Ontario is teaming up with local partner Armstrong-Macko Automotive during RecycleDrive week to not only collect tires, batteries and oil, but to give a local school a chance to win a $20,000 package that includes greenery and products made from recycled tires to beautify its grounds or play space.

The participating garage that collects the most tires during the week wins the package to give to a school of their choice.

CAA SCO will also be donating an additional $1 to the re-greening package for every tire collected during RecycleDrive.

Dave Macko of Armstrong-Macko said they will  accept used tires, house and car batteries and oil at his location at 77 Leeson St., just off Richmond Street in Chatham.

“This is our third year doing this and last year we collected about 130 tires, 850 litres of used motor oil, a dozen car batteries and a pail of household batteries,” Macko said.

Another partner in the initiative is the Ontario Tire Stewardship, an organization that implemented and operates the Used Tires Program. The program ensures 100% of Ontario tires get recycled into new eco-friendly products.
