Friday Chatham-Kent police briefs

Resisting arrest

A 49-year-old man has been charged with theft and resisting arrest following an incident at a Chatham retail store.

According to Chatham-Kent police, officers responded to a theft in progress Thursday where the suspect was observed leaving the store with a cart bearing stolen merchandise. He then fled the scene on a bicycle, but was located nearby and arrested after a brief struggle.

The Chatham resident has been charged with theft under $5,000; possession of property under $5,000 and assaulting a peace officer with intent to resist arrest. He’s scheduled to be back in court Aug. 25.

Intimate partner violence

A domestic violence incident reported by a third-party Thursday evening has resulted in charges against a 21-year-old woman and a man, 45.

Chatham-Kent police say the Chatham incident was investigated after someone reported loud noises and safety concerns. Upon arrival, officers say they found the woman was reluctant to allow them in but upon forced entry they discovered the man hiding inside.

According to police, both parties had court-ordered no-contact conditions.

The woman has been charged with failing to comply with an undertaking, while the man has been charged with facilitating a breach.

The two were taken into custody and held for bail.
