It’s against the law to pass a school bus when it’s stopped with its lights flashing. Yet it still occurs, sometimes with a police officer nearby, ready to hand out an expensive reminder.

That’s what happened yesterday afternoon in Chatham. Police say a school bus stopped on Grand Avenue East Thursday about 3:20 p.m., and had its flashing red lights on and the stop arm extended to let children off the bus. A police officer had stopped behind the bus and suddenly saw a women heading in the opposite direction just breeze on by.

A 59-year-old Blenheim woman faces charges of failing to stop for a school bus. That comes with a $490 fine and six demerit points.
