The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has entered into a five-year lease agreement with the Wallaceburg & District Historical Society to operate the museum.
However, the municipality plans on taking a deeper look at the matter, as Wallaceburg councillors want to see further engagement with other community stakeholders, particularly relating to live performance and theatre.
“I think there needs to be a little bit more review by administration on this before we approve the status quo for the theatre,” Hall told council. “I just don’t think we have all the answers yet.”
Hall pointed out that Chatham-Kent recently completed a secondary plan for Wallaceburg’s south side where the museum and cultural centre are located.
“I’d like to see some further consultation, not just with the museum board, but with other stakeholders,” he added, including the Wallaceburg Arts Council and other groups.
Wallaceburg Coun. Carmen McGregor said it’s been difficult for groups to fundraise and make plans, as there is currently no proper place in town for live performances and theatre.
According to a recent building assessment, major upgrades are needed to bring the museum up to code, including accessibility upgrades, new washrooms and a sprinkler system.
The municipality is currently reviewing its building assets, and improvements at the Wallaceburg site will be considered in the future.
The Wallaceburg museum recently celebrated 40 years of operation.
