It’s the nickels and dimes that can lead to trouble.
Police have a man in custody after someone robbed a gas bar on Park Avenue early this morning.
Police say about 12:45 a.m., a man walked into the gas bar and asked to exchange a quarter for two dimes and a nickel. He got the change and left the store.
But about 10 minutes later, police say the same man came back, asked to use the phone and returned to the counter to ask for his quarter back in exchange for the two dimes and a nickel. As the employee opened the register, the man reached across the counter and grabbed money from the till.
Police say the employee tried to stop the man, but was pushed away.
The man fled on foot.
Police identified the man and he was arrested about an hour later.
A 47-year-old Chatham man faces charges of robbery.
