Cop assaulted
A Blenheim man faces numerous charges after a weekend car accident and escaping from a Chatham-Kent police officer.
On Saturday night, police responded to a single motor vehicle collision in the area of Harwich Road and Welch Line. Upon arrival, police observed the driver trying to flee the scene with a cooler.
Through investigation, police believed the man was driving while under the influence of alcohol and an attempt was made to arrest him.
The man resisted arrest, pushed the officer and fled through the field, police say.
Attempts to locate him were unsuccessful.
Yesterday, the man turned himself in to police. Nathan Blain, 35, of Blenheim, was arrested and charged with impaired driving, failing to stop for an accident, resist arrest and assault police.
He was released pending a future court date of Oct. 20.
Tween assaulted
Yesterday afternoon, an 11-year-old boy was on his way home from school when he placed his backpack down on the sidewalk and began scootering with friends on McNaughton Avenue in Chatham.
Police say the boy was then approached by a man who began yelling at him. The man grabbed the boy’s backpack and then grabbed the boy’s shirt. The boy was able to contact his father who was nearby.
Robert Hiltz, 58, of McNaughton Avenue in Chatham was arrested and charged with assault. He was released pending a future court date.
Gator stolen in Ridgetown
Sometime late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, someone forced their way into a barn at the University of Guelph – Ridgetown Campus and stole a 2018 John Deere gator with a snowplow attachment on the front.
Total value of the theft has been estimated at $12,000.

Collision leads to criminal charges
Around 12:30 p.m. yesterday, police responded to a two-vehicle collision on Adelaide Street near Wellington Street in Chatham.
Police say one man fled on foot as police arrived on scene.
Following a short foot chase, the man was taken into custody by nearby officers. Upon being searched incident to arrest, the man was found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine.
A 26-year-old Tilbury man has been charged with failing to stop for an accident, driving while prohibited, drug possession and two counts of failing to comply with his release conditions.
Theft of tools
Sometime late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, someone entered an unlocked garage on Hyslop Street in Chatham and stole several Ridgid tools, Tippmann Cronus paintball gun, children’s snowmobile helmet and two LiteHawk remote control cars.
Total value of the theft has been estimated at $3,400.

Sometime late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, someone entered an unlocked garage on Sheldon Avenue and stole a black and yellow Champion 4000 generator and two DeWalt disc sanders.
Total value of the theft has been estimated at $1,500.

Theft charges
On Sept. 15, a man attended a gas station on Grand Avenue in Chatham and stole a small drone, valued at approximately $100.
With the assistance of video surveillance, police identified the man responsible.
Yesterday morning, an officer located the man on Richmond Street in Chatham and he was arrested.
James Leblanc, 24, of no fixed address, was charged with theft and possession of stolen property.
