Chatham-Kent fire officials say a mother and child escaped injury following a kitchen fire on St. Clair Street in Chatham Thursday evening.

Firefighters from Stations 1 and 2 were called to the scene at 534 St. Clair about 6:20 p.m. and quickly extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading.

Damage is estimated at $25,000.

Firefighters remained on the scene for a time, clearing heavy smoke from the residence.

Fire officials remind residents to never leave cooking food on the stovetop unattended, and keep a close eye on food cooking inside the oven. Keep cooking areas clean and clear of combustibles.
