A Chatham man faces charges after someone stole bronze plaques and vases from Maple Leaf Cemetery recently.

On March 15, a municipal worker contacted police after noticing the bronze memorial plaque, valued at about $2,000, had been pried off the door of the Legion Chapel.

Nine days later, a citizen reported that several bronze vases and plaques had also been taken from gravesites.

Police investigated and believe they identified the man responsible, learning the stolen items had been sold for scrap.

A 36-year-old Chatham man is charged with two counts of theft and two counts of possession of stolen property.
