The District A1 Lions Sight Conservation Foundation, affectionately known as “Eyes Right,” has as its mission to provide vision care equipment to the various hospitals in Southwestern Ontario.
Since its establishment in 1991, it has provided more than $1 million for eye health care equipment in over 15 projects. Chatham Kent Health Alliance has twice benefited in the past.
Funds are raised by donations from the clubs in A1, personal donations, in memoriams, and estate funds.
The Chatham Lions Club proposed the next project, as was identified by a CKHA eye surgeon: To replace a 25-year-old surgical microscope used in vision-saving cataract surgery with a modern microscope, offering clearer imaging, improved lighting and hands-free controls, giving surgeons the ability to operate with greater efficiency and confidence.
CKHA chose the Zeiss OPMI Lumera 700 system at a cost of $189,702.
The Eyes Right board approved this proposal and recently made the first of a series of cheque presentations to the CKHA Foundation in the amount of $50,000. Further presentations will occur as the funds are raised.
