Man assaults youth; charged

A man faces assault charges following an altercation at a residence in Chatham Sunday evening.

Investigation revealed that a youth was threatened and physically assaulted by an older man.

Further investigation revealed that the accused has a history of aggressive behaviour. Emergency medical services were requested due to the victim experiencing difficulty breathing, police say.

A 53-year-old man is charged with assault.

Historic assaults

A Jan. 9 report of intimate partner violence led to charges against a local man.

Police say the incidents go back to July 2024.

Police say in once instance, the female victim was choked during a dispute, and other altercations involved physical assaults.

A 28-year-old Tupperville man is charged with assault causing bodily harm and assault.

Someone’s knocking at the door

Police report another instance of intimate partner violence over the weekend.

Officers investigated after a man was knocking on a Chatham woman’s door early Saturday morning. Police say the man left the area prior to the officers’ arrival.

The officers, however, investigated and learned a man repeatedly went to the woman’s residence and communicated with her despite being told the contact was not welcome.

Police say the man assaulted her last August as well, and that he had been cautioned about criminal harassment in October.

A 26-year-old Harwich Township man is charged with criminal harassment and assault.

Store security staffer assaulted

A local man is up on assault charges following a Jan. 8 scuffle at a St. Clair Street store.

Police say officers responded to a report of an assault on a loss-prevention officer at the store by a customer.

Investigations revealed that the accused physically assaulted the victim and made verbal threats to cause bodily harm.

Through further investigation and the use of surveillance footage, officers were able to identify the suspect involved.

The following afternoon, police arrested the man on Linden Street in Chatham.

A 28-year-old man is charged with two counts of assault and one of uttering threats to cause bodily harm.

Impaired charges

A Friday night drive-thru confrontation at a St. Clair Street business in Chatham has led to impaired charges.

Police say they were called for an unwanted person at the restaurant about 8:30 p.m., as someone had refused to leave the drive-thru.

The person left prior to officers arriving on scene.

However, he returned, police say, shortly before 11 p.m., going into the restaurant. Police arrived and located the man.

The man showed signs he had been drinking, police say, and he had been operating a motor vehicle.

Officers wanted to get him to take a breath test, but police say the man refused.

A 57-year-old Orford Township man is charged with refusing to comply with a demand and being intoxicated in a public place.

On Saturday evening, a crash on Grand Avenue East led to charges against a Chatham man.

Police say the collision took place shortly before 8:15 p.m. One vehicle was stopped at a red light and it was hit by another. The driver of the second vehicle sped off, police say.

Officers located their suspect on Schooner Court in Chatham, and they say he showed signs of being impaired.

A 30-year-old Chatham man is charged with impaired driving.

A Sunday night crash near Tilbury has led to charges.

Police say they were called about 11 p.m. over a single-vehicle crash on Morris Line near Tilbury.

The call actually came from the driver who said she was unable to get out of the vehicle.

Officers arrived and police say the driver showed signed of being impaired.

She was taken to hospital by ambulance for non-life-threatening injuries. Tests revealed her blood-alcohol content exceeded the legal limit, police say.

A 61-year-old Comber man faces impaired driving charges.
