Three years of upgrades at a Chatham park are complete, and the committee that put the plans in action can’t wait to show off everything to the public.

J.G. Taylor Park Revitalization Committee members said the final elements of five phases of work is done at one of Chatham-Kent’s busiest parks.

Completed over five phases, the project has delivered significant improvements that expand recreation, accessibility, and community gathering opportunities for residents of all ages at the King Street East park.

Highlights include a new regulation-size basketball court with player seating, modern playground equipment, hard-surfaced accessible pathways connecting all areas of the park, concrete game tables for chess and ping pong, a gaga ball pit, and new benches installed on hard surfaces around the public pool.

The final phase included renovations to the pavilion and the installation of new park signage.

The J.G. Taylor Park project was made possible through the support of Hydro One-Ward Funding, Clarke Construction, C-K Ready Mix, John Harris Concrete, the C-K Police Service Board, the C-K Police Association, Steel Shake and Tile with SBRoofing and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. Their contributions, together with the dedication of committee members, community partners, and volunteers, helped turn a shared vision into reality, committee members said.

The revitalization effort began with the realization there was a need for a basketball court in the park.

The J.G. Taylor Park Revitalization Committee will dedicate this project to the legacy of the Woodstock Industrial Institute, founded on this site in 1908. The Institute’s history is rooted in the principles of education, diversity, and community – values that continue to inspire and strengthen the neighbourhood today.

The new signage and park improvements recognize this chapter in the area’s history while creating a vibrant space for future generations.

“This project demonstrates what can be accomplished when community members, businesses, organizations, and local government work together toward a common goal,” said Marjorie Crew, a member of the J.G. Taylor Park Revitalization Committee, said in a media release. “The improvements made over the past three years will benefit residents and visitors for generations to come while honouring the rich history and legacy of this site.”

The committee invites the public to attend its dedication and recognition event Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. in the park.
