LETTER: We need leaders, not cash grabbers, on council

Editor: If you are a person who intends to vote in the coming municipal election, then I ask you to think. Think about what you want Chatham-Kent to look like five years from now, because that is what you are doing when you vote.

The Province of Ontario recently said Chatham-Kent is one of the most productive in Southern Ontario, and recent inspection of our finances state that we are effectively debt free. These things did not just happen. They are the results of knowledgeable, dedicated, hard-working people trying to make life better.

A few years ago, questionable decisions were made, resulting in 10,000 people moving out of Chatham-Kent (mostly to find work).

We have recovered from that and what we need over the next few years is another 20,000 people to help share the costs.

Unlike you, a municipality can only go two ways – forward or backward. We need leaders and not people who are there for the paycheque. We need strong, smart, dedicated people who are there for the work first and the paycheque second.

Every municipality in Ontario has problems.

I have lived in Chatham-Kent for over 80 years and owned a home for 55 years. I have seen councils and mayors come ang go. Some were good and some just pushed paper around. These are tough times and we need tough people to get us through.

James Robert
