Fundraising walk set for May 31

Shannon Verschraegen and Kristen Fife, organizers behind the Strong Starts for Tiny Hearts fundraising walk, hope the public turns out in droves for their May 31 event.

There is still time to sign up to take part in a fast-approaching fundraiser for the Women & Children’s Unit at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

Chatham-Kent community members are invited to lace up their sneakers May 31 for Strong Starts for Tiny Hearts, a community 5K run, walk, and stroll. It is set to take place starting at 10 a.m. at Mud Creek in Chatham.

Shannon Verschraegen and Kristen Fife, two registered nurses in the Women and Children’s Unit, initiated the fundraiser. It is focused on strengthening health-care services for the region’s youngest patients and their families by supporting equipment and enhanced care.

Organizers describe the initiative as more than just a physical activity, calling it “a powerful show of support for the women, babies, and families who rely on local hospital services.”

The 5K is designed to be inclusive of all fitness levels, welcoming participants to bring friends, children, and strollers to move through the Mud Creek trails.

Participants can register for the event with a $25 fee, which is payable on the day of the walk. Registration will open at 9 a.m. on May 31. Participants who raise more than $50 in donations will have their registration fee waived.

By signing up as an event fundraiser, individuals are automatically registered to participate in the 5K journey.

Interested community members can register and begin their fundraising efforts online at https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/strongstartsfortinyhearts.
