Glean away, folks

The Chatham-Kent Food Policy Council (CKFPC), in partnership with CK Public Health and Employment and Social Services, has opened up the application period for the 2026 Gleaning Project Grant.
Gleaning is the act of gathering leftover fruits and vegetables after the main harvest from local farms. This is food that is perfectly good to eat but would otherwise go to waste. These foods are then redistributed to food banks, soup kitchens, community meal programs, and other local organizations.

By reducing food waste and strengthening access to food, the project plays an important role in supporting community food security across Chatham-Kent, officials said in a media release.

The CKFPC is seeking a community agency to lead and expand this project for the coming year.

“The ideal partner will be community-focused, passionate about reducing food waste and improving food access, and excited to work with local farmers while coordinating volunteers for on-site gleaning activities,” the release stated.

“Gleaning offers a practical, community-driven way to ensure more people in Chatham-Kent have consistent access to fresh, local food,” said Wallaceburg Coun. Carmen McGregor, who is also chair of the CKFPC. “We are excited to partner with an agency that will continue to grow this impactful effort.”
The successful community agency will strengthen the local food system by reducing food waste and improving food access for residents across Chatham-Kent.

Deadline to apply is April 1. Funding up for access is $25,000.
