Nice ice at that price

Prices for summer ice time in Chatham-Kent will be cooler this year.

That’s thanks to a motion from West Kent Coun. Melissa Harrigan asking for the removal of an added $50 summer ice premium fee and the requirement that an organization must book a minimum of 30 hours of ice time.

According to Harrigan, councillors have garnered feedback from frustrated user groups concerned about the added cost and the 30-hour commitment.

Under the pilot project, at least one Chatham-Kent arena must remain open in warmer weather to accommodate the pilot program, however it is not known which one will be chosen.

All user groups are to be notified of the new rules by March 1. The motion, approved at the Jan. 26 council meeting, also directs administration to prepare a report for council once the pilot project is complete.

Nine deputations supporting the change were presented to council.
