How the Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission is governed in the future is the subject of a special council meeting to be held Feb. 2.
That’s when municipal officials will review the pros and cons of the PUC coming in under the umbrella of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent as a new division, rather than standing as a separate entity.
A recently completed study of the governance structure by KPMG came up with three options, with the dissolving the PUC and bringing it under the municipality’s purview as the favoured recommendation.
However, Chatham-Kent council opted to postpone the decision last December voting 9-8 to delay a decision in order to glean more information.
Officials have stated that bringing the PUC into the municipal fold will save millions. It’s estimated that Chatham-Kent will need a $1.18-billion investment over the next 10 years to accommodate residential growth and meet the growing demand of greenhouse expansion.
