Be careful on the roads out there

As municipal plows work to clean up the roads in the wake of the overnight storm and continued blowing snow, motorists are encouraged to play it safe out there.

Between Wednesday and Thursday morning, the Chatham-Kent Police Service responded to six motor vehicle collisions and 10 incidents requiring police assistance  where multiple motorists had left the roadway.

The weather has led to a series of crashes along Highway 401. The OPP closed the eastbound lanes at Queen’s Line this morning due to the number of collisions. Police say it could remain shut for hours to allow emergency crews to clear the vehicles and clear the snow.

Meanwhile, the westbound lanes are closed at Orford Road near Highgate, also due to a number of collisions.

The OPP urges people to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

Chatham-Kent police encourage drivers to follow these guidelines:

  • Leave earlier for your destination
  • Drive cautiously and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead
  • Follow all traffic signs
  • Ensure your vehicle’s lights are on
  • Use your indicators when making turns
