The OPP are on the hunt for a group of robbers who impersonated police in a daring theft on Highway 401.

A media release from the Elgin OPP detachment said the incident occurred in Chatham-Kent around 9 p.m. Christmas Day near the highway’s 65-km marker. It’s reported that the complainant was stopped by two suspect vehicles.

According to the report, one of the suspect vehicles was a black SUV with flashing red and blue lights on the windshield. There were no police markings on either suspect vehicle.

Initially, the report said two suspects approached the victim’s vehicle while a third stayed in a vehicle. After the complainant was told to exit the vehicle by the thief, an exchange ensued. The suspects then fled, stealing the victim’s vehicle.

One of the suspects is described as a Black male in his 30s, about six-feet tall. He was wearing all black clothing, a black mask, a black ballistic style vest and was carrying a handgun in a holster.

The second suspect was described as a Brown man in his 20s, wearing similar clothing. There is no description of the third suspect.

Witnesses who may have information or have dashcam footage are asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous reports can also be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Police says they believe there is no threat to public safety, calling the theft an “isolated incident.”

The public is reminded they have the right to ask an officer to provide the name of their service, detachment, badge number, rank and warrant card.
