A man is in custody, while Chatham-Kent police and fire officials continue to investigate what they way was an arson fire inside a Wheatley apartment building.
The fire broke out at the building on Erie Street North, but was contained to a single unit, police say.
However, several tenants in nearby apartments had to be evacuated due to excessive smoke in the building.
Through investigation it was found the fire was intentionally set, police say. Officers arrested one man and he was held for bail.
The apartment suffered fire, smoke and water damage.
