Man hits woman, charged

A Chatham man faces charges following a domestic dispute in Chatham Sunday morning.

At 10:41 a.m., Chatham-Kent police responded to King Street West in Chatham for a report of an altercation between a man and a woman.

It was revealed that the man and the woman were verbally arguing in an apartment on King Street West. The situation escalated when the man physically assaulted the woman, striking her multiple times, before fleeing the apartment with her purse, police say.

As the woman pursued the man, he further damaged her belongings by throwing her cell phone to the ground, causing it to break.

Further investigation into the matter uncovered that a similar incident had transpired the day before, resulting in minor physical injuries sustained by the woman, police say.

Based on the evidence gathered, the police arrested the man.

A 28-year-old Chatham man was charged with mischief, assault causing bodily harm, and two counts of assault.

Bail violation

What began as a disturbance call ended in charges for a local woman Sunday evening.

At 7:15 p.m., police responded to a disturbance on Holden Street in Dresden. According to the received information, individuals were arguing within an apartment and destroying property.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers located the woman involved in the incident. During their investigation, it was confirmed that the woman was bound by an undertaking, which included conditions that prohibited her from visiting the address, police say. As a result of her violation, she was arrested.

A 48-year-old Chatham-Kent woman was charged with failing to comply with the undertaking.

Theft…arrest

On Saturday afternoon, police responded to a business on King Street West in Chatham for a shoplifting incident.

Upon arrival, the officer gathered information that a man had entered the store and spoke with the staff. The man proceeded to loiter around the store before taking an item from a counter display and exiting the store without attempting to pay for the merchandise, police say.

Using the available surveillance video footage, the officer was able to positively identify the individual involved. Despite their initial efforts, they could not locate the suspect, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Sunday morning, shortly before 9 a.m., the investigating officer located and arrested the man on Wellington Street West in Chatham.

A 49-year-old Chatham man was charged with theft and possession of stolen property.
