The Heritage Singers Canada group wowed the crowd at Emancipation Day ceremonies at the renamed Josiah Henson Museum of African-Canadian History last year.

In 1833, the British Empire introduced an act to abolish slavery in most of countries it controlled around the world.

On Aug. 1, 1834, the law came into effect, thereby “emancipating” slaves and officially setting them free.

This Saturday, July 29, “Emancipation Day” as it has come to be known will be celebrated in Dresden at the Josiah Henson Museum of African-Canadian History. The day features a full slate of activities and performances to mark the important milestone.

The free event, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. has something for all ages. The London Gospel Collective Choir is performing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the Motown Boys will sing top 40 hits from 10:45 a.m. to 1:40 p.m.

From 10:25 a.m. to 1:20 p.m., artist Kwame Delfish will speak about his work in designing the limited-edition pure silver $20 coin that honours the role of Black Canadian volunteers who served in the remarkable First World War construction battalion.

At 11:05 a.m., chef Patience Chirisa will be doing a book signing and there will be arts and crafts for children, as well as finger food samples for all guests.

Author Ruth Lor Malloy will talk about her book “Brightening My Corner: A Memoir of Dreams Fulfilled,” at 11:25 a.m. She will be signing books as well.

At 2 p.m., rapper Duane Gibson is speaking about how Josiah Henson is central to many of his performances, and he will discuss slavery, the Underground Railroad, spirituals and his father’s portrayal of Josiah Henson.

Commemorative remarks will be made at 11:40 a.m.

The Chilled Cork Food Truck will be onsite serving southern barbecue.

The Josiah Henson Museum of African-Canadian History is located at 29251 Freedom Rd. in Dresden.
