The Sydenham Field Naturalists (SFN), have launched a No Mow May initiative in Chatham-Kent.
No Mow May is a conservation initiative that was started in the United Kingdom and gaining momentum in Canada, according to the organization.
To help create habitation and foraging for early pollinators, this initiative requires the pausing of lawn-mowing practices during the month of May.
Seventy-five per cent of the world’s food crops depend on pollinators, and this gives them a head start, according to the SFN.
There are several other benefits to pausing or reducing mowing practices, including saving money on lawn treatments and watering, as well as reducing air pollution from gas lawnmowers.
