Assault arrest

A roommate rumble around midnight Friday has led to charges, especially when problems continued after an initial arrest.

Through investigation, Chatham-Kent police learned a man and his roommate engaged in a verbal argument. It escalated when the man pushed his roommate several times and put her in a headlock before pushing her to the floor, police say.

The man was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where he was charged and released with conditions including not attending the residence or communicating with his roommate.

He was also provided with a future court date.

Shortly after being released, the man called the roommate numerous times before returning to the apartment. After knocking and yelling at the door, the man entered through a window and confronted his roommate again, police say.

Once inside, the man damaged items belonging to the roommate.

Before police arrived, the man fled from the residence. He was located a short time later by police dog Helix and taken into custody.

The 24-year-old Chatham was charged with assault causing bodily harm and two counts of assault from the initial incident. He was additionally charged with breaking and entering and three counts of failing to comply with an undertaking for the second incident. He was transported to police headquarter and held pending a bail hearing.

No licence? Big problem

Yesterday, at 11:26 a.m., a member of the Chatham-Kent Police Traffic Unit conducted a traffic stop on Queens Line in Tilbury East Township after the vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed and passing numerous vehicles.

Through investigation, the officer learned the driver was driving with a suspended driver’s license, no insurance and without valid plates.

A 58-year-old Tilbury man received five Part III summons for driving under suspension, without insurance, plates not authorized, and speeding.

His vehicle was towed and impounded for 45 days, and his plates were seized.

Theft arrest

A Chatham man faces charges after someone recently walked out of the liquor store in downtown Chatham without paying for the booze he took.

The incident took place Feb. 26. A man was observed by employees removing merchandise from the shelves and leaving the store without attempting to pay for the items.

Through video surveillance, police identified the man.

On Thursday, just before 5:30 p.m., police say the man was located by officers on Princess Street South in Chatham and arrested.

A 28-year-old Chatham man was charged with theft and possession of the stolen property. He was released with a future court date.
