Arrest in last week’s bank robbery

Chatham-Kent police say they’ve tracked down the man who robbed the RBC in downtown Chatham last week and escaped on a mountain bike.

As previously released, on Nov. 5, shortly after 3 p.m., police responded to a robbery at the Royal Bank on King Street West in Chatham.

Yesterday afternoon, police responded to a shoplifting complaint at Sport Check in Chatham.

The man stole clothing valued at approximately $370 and fled the store making no attempt to pay for the items.

Officers located the man a short distance away on his bicycle and he was taken into custody.

Through investigation, police identified the man as also being responsible for the bank robbery and two other shoplifting incidents at local pharmacies this month.

The 40-year-old man of no fixed address has been charged with:

– theft under $5000 x3

– being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000 x2

– assault

– robbery

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
