One lucky Highgate resident won $172,870 this week.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation drew the winning ticket for their fundraiser. The lucky number is 1107940.

Emily Geroux of Highgate had the lucky ticket.

Geroux did not check her ticket until Thursday morning, after she had been discussing with her husband during breakfast that a winner had not yet been announced.

“I realized I had the number and I just said ‘I won! I won! I won!’” said Geroux. “I couldn’t believe it, I have never won anything before.”

She adds that she bought the ticket because she wanted to support a worthy cause.

Her initial plans for the money include buying a new truck with more seating to accommodate their grandkids, and using some to replace their deck.

A total of 9,671 tickets, accounting for 1,194,410 numbers, were sold for this year’s Igniting Healthcare 50/50 FUNdraiser.

This is CKHA’s second annual Igniting Healthcare 50/50 FUNdraiser. Last year’s winner was Bert Vanderheide, who took home $149,180.

Funds raised for the draw are earmarked to purchase equipment for the urology department.
