Is it wise to open a bigger school right now?

Editor: Given the fact that Covid-19 continues to infect people right across Ontario and tragically take the lives of some who fall sick, should we be opening the ‘mega school’ at this moment in time?

We have been told to stay in our bubble. and while the size of the bubble has increased as we moved from Stage 1 to Stage 3, and the size of other groups we are allowed to be part of has also increased, none of these numbers approach the huge number of children that will attend St Angela Merici School starting in September.

There still is no vaccine for Covid-19 and despite early opinions that it would not affect children, sadly it does.

Yes the board and the staff will do all they can to prevent students, and staff from becoming infected but they cannot guarantee 100-per-cent success.

Luckily, the three schools that St Angela’s replaces are all standing empty, and could be put back into use for this school year with perhaps only a few students being bussed to St. Angela’s.

Both my daughters graduated from The Pines some years ago, so I don’t have to worry about them, but I feel for parents faced with the decisions they will have to make in the next couple of weeks.
