A drifter faces multiple charges after Chatham-Kent police say he started beating on a total stranger last night trying to steal his cigarettes.

Police say about 6:30 p.m., a man approached another person walking on King Street in Chatham and assaulted him while trying to grab his smokes.

A concerned citizen witnessed the beating and called the cops.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say as the assailant fled the area, he approached another stranger on Barthe Street, and began flailing on him too. This victim did not suffer any injuries.

Officers found their suspect on Grand Avenue and slipped on the steel bracelets.

A 26-year-old man of no fixed address is charged with robbery and assault.
