Chatham-Kent council has approved the plans from Curative Cannabis to construct a medical marijuana production facility on Longwoods Road.

A request came to council recently to approve an application for Site Plan Control to allow the company to build a 26,425 sq. ft. facility at 10078 Longwoods Rd. in Chatham Township.

In his report, Director of Planning Services Bruce McAllister recommended the application be approved with two conditions. First, that the facility be equipped with an industrial grade multi-stage air treatment carbon filtration system, or similar technology, to reduce and/or treat the emission of pollen, dust and odours expelled from the facility as designed by a qualified person.

McAllister said this first condition should alleviate the main concern of adjacent neighbours about potential odour from the site.

The second condition involved removing an unused driveway and culvert and restoring the ditch to match existing drainage swale along Longwoods Road.

McAllister reported the company has submitted a number of supporting studies and technical documents, including an archeological assessment due to the facility’s proximity to the Thames River.

The company can now move to the first phase of the project, which is to demolish existing structures on the property in preparation for construction to begin.
