Local New Democrats embraced the youth movement over the weekend, selecting Jordan McGrail as their candidate for the June 7 provincial election.

McGrail, who is employed at St. Clair College’s Thames Campus, and in her mid 30s, was selected over the previous candidate Dan Gelinas.

John Willatt, the President of the Chatham-Kent Leamington Riding Association for the NDP, credited Gelinas for his past efforts, but added the selection offers a fresh future.

“Dan did an excellent job in the last election and came a very close second, but clearly the membership felt it was time for a change,” he said in a media release.

McGrail has led the local chapter of the “We Own It” campaign, which has highlighted the need to resist further privatization of government services, according to local NDP officials.

“Jordan will do a great job for us,” Willatt said. “It’s going to mean a lot of work for her and for her team, but we are 100 per cent behind her and determined to do everything we can to convince voters that Andrea Horwath and the NDP are the best choice for Ontario, and that Jordan McGrail is the best person to represent Chatham-Kent Leamington at Queen’s Park as their MPP.”
