Two men are in custody and almost $8,000 worth of drugs are off the street after an observant officer pulled over a car last night.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m., an officer on general patrol checked license plates on a black Ford Taurus going southbound on First St. in Chatham.  The officer learned the license plates were not registered to the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on Fourth St.  As the vehicle stopped, the passenger fled on foot behind several houses.  He was quickly taken into custody following a short foot chase.

K9 Arry tracked the route through the backyards the man ran through and two clear plastic bags that he threw while running containing cocaine and methamphetamine were located.  K9 Arry also searched the vehicle resulting in more cocaine and methamphetamine being seized.

Both the driver and passenger were arrested and transported to police headquarters.  Upon being searched, the driver was also found to be in possession of crystal methamphetamine.  Total value of the drugs seized was $7,360.

A 30-year-old Chatham man has been charged with two counts of possession for the purposes of trafficking and breach of probation and a 31-year-old Sarnia man has been charged with two counts of possession for the purposes of trafficking.

Both men were released pending a future court date of September 8.
