Drugs and weapons charges have been laid after an observant Chatham-Kent police officer noticed suspicious activity in a Chatham neighbourhood.

Yesterday afternoon, an officer on general patrol saw four men walking together in the area of Park Street and Princess Street in Chatham.  As the man conducted a suspicious hand to hand transaction with another man, the officer stopped to further investigate.  When searched, the man was found to be in possession of a backpack which contained a 9mm handgun, sawed off .22 calibre rifle, ammunition, marijuana and other drug paraphernalia.

The 32-year-old Chatham man has been charged with 26 weapon related offences and one count of possession for the purposes of trafficking.  He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
