A 23-year-old Chatham man has been charged with theft of motor vehicle, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, uttering threats, mischief under $5000 and assault after an incident with an ex-girlfriend.

Police said the man went to his ex-girlfriend’s residence to pick up some of his belongings.  An argument erupted which escalated into a physical altercation.

The man assaulted the woman, broke a door and picture frame.  The man fled the residence prior to police arrival.

Through investigation, the woman disclosed that on the weekend, the man took her vehicle without consent and struck a hydro pole.  The man failed to report the accident and threatened the woman if she called police.

Around 9:30 p.m. last night, police located the man and he was arrested and held in custody pending a bail hearing.
