Yesterday, an elderly Chatham woman contacted police to report that several cheques associated to her bank account had been cashed without her permission. Between October 2015 and January 2016, eighteen cheques were found to have been deposited into the man’s account. The cheques in total accumulated almost $3000.
Through investigation, police learned that the man had befriended the woman, also his neighbour, and removed a cheque book from her residence last fall. Luckily, a family member discovered the discrepancies in the woman’s bank statements.
The 73-year-old Chatham man has been arrested and charged with fraud under $5000 x18 and possession of a forged document X18. He was released with conditions pending a future court date of February 19, 2016.
"Into the mans account?" What man?
headline was the first thing I noticed – "never to old" should be "too old"
Thanks for the catch, Jeanette.
