A knife-wielding would be robber was no match for a gas bar employee with a snow shovel early this morning in Blenheim.

A masked man approached the Pioneer Gas Bar on Chatham Street around midnight and demanded to be let in.

The employee inside the locked kiosk told the man he would have to take off his ski mask to be admitted at which point the suspect brandished a “hunting style” knife with a 6-8 inch blade and demanded all the money in the till.

The employee grabbed a plastic snow shovel and the thief jumped on a dark coloured bicycle and fled the scene.

Police arrived shortly after but couldn’t locate the man.

The male suspect is described as approximately 5’7” in height, white complexion, slender build, wearing a black ski mask with mouth and eye holes, dark hoodie and dark blue or black pants.
