Stumbling through a parking lot in the middle of the night is a good way to get the attention of a passing police officer, especially if you’re a teenager.
About 1:30 a.m., police say an officer spotted a male youth plodding through the Downtown Chatham Centre parking lot, and pulled up to investigate. The kid appeared disoriented.
According to police, the officer learned the youth was breaching a 10 p.m. curfew that is part of his probation order, so out came the handcuffs.
As the officer informed the teen he was under arrest, police say the kid pulled a kitchen knife from his coat pocket. The cop disarmed the youth, but the teen fled on foot.
Officers caught up to the teen near William Street and again approached to make the arrest. This time, the teen pushed and kicked the officers, police say, before being hauled off to headquarters for a night in a cell.
A 17-year-old Chatham teen is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest, assaulting police, and two counts of failing to comply.
