Caller ID on your phone isn’t an exact science, and scam artists have picked up on that.
At least one has even taking to trying to act like they were from “Chatham Police.”
According to Chatham-Kent police, a citizen reported yesterday she received multiple calls from a location that came up as “Chatham Police.”
Actual police say scammers are able to utilize software to mask their real identities by displaying fake telephone numbers. This is called “phone spoofing,” and it’s used by fraudsters to mislead people into thinking the call is from a reputable person or business.
If you think you’ve been phone spoofed, contact your phone company immediately, police say, as your telephone provider may have the ability to track where the call really came from.
