police cuffs

Apparently, the nice weather this weekend brought out the nasty in some of our local citizenry.

Two men face domestic related charges and a third for assault.

Police say a man was arrested on Saturday and charged with two counts of domestic assault. He was released, pending a future court date, Sunday morning with conditions not to communicate with a specific woman.

But about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, police say the man spoke to a person who witnessed the assault, and the man allegedly attempted to intimidate the witness and asked her to pass a message onto the woman with whom he was not to communicate.

And less than 30 minutes later, the man called the woman on her cell phone, police say.

As a result, police re-arrested the man last night, about 10:30 p.m.

The suspect isn’t the only person to recently get released from custody, only to wind up back behind bars again.

Police say a man was released May 20, with conditions of a curfew and non-association with a specific woman, as well as a weapons prohibition.

On Saturday, police say the man went to the woman’s home in the former Chatham Township and was sporting a handgun. An argument escalated, and the man started throwing stuff around before assaulting the woman, police say.

The victim was able to flee and call police.

Just before 8 a.m. Sunday, with the assistance of the Critical Incident Response Team, police located the man, who was hiding out inside the home.

A 29-year-old Wallaceburg man faces charges of overcoming resistance to choking, unauthorized possession of a firearm, mischief under $5,000, failing to comply with a prohibition order, two counts of assault, and four counts of failing to comply.

A 34-year-old Chatham man faces charges of intimidation, obstructing justice and two counts of failing to comply.

Also on Sunday night, two neighbours began arguing at a Chatham apartment complex. The argument turned physical, police say, when one man grabbed the other by the throat, pushed him out the door and kicked him after he fell.

Police have charged a 22-year-old man with assault.
