job cuts

McKesson Canada is gutting its operations in Chatham.

The pharmaceutical supply company has 71 employees working at its Richmond Street distribution centre. When the cuts are done, just six people will be left standing.

Employees of the Chatham operation learned of the pending cuts after meeting with management Friday afternoon.

“This is a challenging day for the McKesson Canada family. We fully recognize that these business decisions have a high impact on the personal and professional lives of our employees. We are committed to providing them with the best available care throughout the transition,” said Alain Champagne, senior vice-president, pharmaceutical distribution and operations, via a press release.

McKesson is undergoing a restructuring of its Ontario distribution network and is building a state-of-the-art distribution centre in Trenton.

McKesson’s Ottawa distribution centre is also downsizing, as 84 jobs will be lost there.

According to McKesson management, the Chatham operation will remain at its location at 715 Richmond St., and the cuts will occur between January and July.

Posts by McKesson employees on social media indicate they expect to be out of work in February.
