The St. Clair Catholic District School Board has a new leader effective April 1.

That’s when long-time educator Lisa Demers will take over as director of education following Scott Johnson’s retirement.

According to a recent media release, Demers brings 30 years of experience to the role. She began as a classroom teacher before taking on leadership roles as a principal, system principal, and for the last eight years as superintendent of education.

Board chair John Van Heck had words of praise for Demers’ passion for education.

“Lisa is a dedicated leader who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to student success and the values of Catholic education throughout her career,” Van Heck said. “We are confident that she will guide St. Clair Catholic with integrity, passion, and a focus on creating supportive environments where all students can thrive.”

In a media statement, Demers said she is excited to lead the board in its next chapter of growth.

“I am truly honoured to be entrusted with the role of director of education for St. Clair Catholic,” she said. “The work we’ve done to date has created a solid foundation, and I look forward to collaborating with our exceptional team to continue fostering an environment where every student is supported and celebrated. I am committed to ensuring that all of our students have the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

As a superintendent, Demers held key portfolios, including special education; mental health and well-being; Indigenous education; equity, diversity and inclusion; as well as safe schools.

She also shared her expertise at the provincial level through committees such as the Ontario Special Needs Strategy Committee and the Regional Special Education and Curriculum Council, as well as serving as a mentor and instructor in Catholic leadership programs.
