A Montreal man faces charges after someone fled from the OPP in Chatham-Kent on Canada Day and ultimately got arrested more than 100 kilometres away and travelling in the opposite direction.

Police say an officer tried to pull a vehicle over about 7:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Highway 401 in Chatham-Kent, as the vehicle had no plates. However, the driver hit the gas and took off.

In the interest of public safety, the officer did not pursue the vehicle.

About two hours later, police spotted the vehicle headed east on the 401 not too far from where it was first spotted, but heading in the opposite direction.

Once again, the vehicle failed to stop, police say. In fact, the driver ignored two attempts by police to pull them over.

Finally, 135 kilometres later, police managed to get the vehicle to stop.

It turns out the vehicle was reported stolen from Hamilton.

A 49-year-old Montreal man is charged with possession of stolen property, three counts of flight from police, mischief, careless driving and driving a vehicle with no plates.
