Early-morning charges

Shortly after 3 a.m. this morning, a Chatham-Kent police officer on general patrol observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Countryview Line. The officer recorded the man driving 110km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone.

The man also disobeyed a stop sign, police say.

A traffic stop was initiated near Bear Line Road.

Through investigation, the officer learned that the license plates were not authorized for the vehicle nor did the man have a valid permit or insurance. The man was also currently under house arrest.

A 31-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with speeding, disobeying a stop sign, using plates not authorized for the vehicle, driving with no currently validated permit, operating a motor vehicle with no insurance, and failing to comply with his release conditions.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Assault charges

Last night, just before midnight, Chatham-Kent police responded to a disturbance on Fifth Street in Chatham between two men who live in the same building.

A 22-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault.

He just won’t stay away

Despite two probation orders in each of the past years to stay away from a local woman, Chatham-Kent police say a man can’t seem to comply.

He received orders from the courts in July of 2019 and November of last year. Two stated that he was not to communicate with a specific Chatham woman or attend her home.

However, this summer, the man has been observed in the woman’s home several times, police say.

Yesterday morning, police located the man and he was arrested.

A 45-year-old Chatham man has been charged with four counts of failing to comply with his probation order.
