Family feud leads to charges
Just before 6 a.m. yesterday morning, Chatham-Kent police responded to a disturbance between a man and his mother at local motel in Wheatley.
Through investigation, police learned that during a verbal argument, the man while in possession of a steak knife, damaged items in the room.
A 29-year-old Leamington man was arrested and charged with mischief, being in possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with his Probation Order by being in possession of a weapon.
The hoodie gave him away
Yesterday morning, police responded to Hope Haven on Wellington Street in Chatham in regards to a break and enter.
At this time, police learned that someone removed an air conditioning unit from a window and entered the building. Once inside, the suspect(s) stole a blue and yellow hoodie and bank cheques.
With the assistance of video surveillance, police identified the man responsible.
Yesterday afternoon, police located the man on Gray Street in Chatham wearing the stolen hoodie.
A 19-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested and charged with break and enter, being in possession of property and failing to comply with his Probation Order. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Domestic charges
Yesterday afternoon, police responded to a domestic disturbance at an apartment in Dresden.
Through investigation, police learned that during a verbal argument, the man locked the woman on her balcony. As the woman called for police assistance, the man unlocked the door and left the apartment. In speaking with the woman, police further learned that this was not the first incident of domestic violence during their relationship.
Last night, police located the man and he was arrested.
A 23-year-old Dresden man has been charged with forcible confinement, uttering threats, mischief, assault and criminal harassment. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Suspended driver
Last night, around 8:30 p.m. an officer with the Traffic Unit observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Bear Line Road in Dover Township.
A traffic stop was initiated and the officer learned that the man was suspended from driving.
A 21-year-old North York man was arrested and charged with speeding and driving while under suspension. His vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded for seven days.
B&E
Sometime yesterday morning between 2:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., someone forced their way into a shed a RONA Building Centre on Colborne Street in Chatham, causing about $1,500 damage.
Once inside, the suspect(s) stole a DeWalt saw and Erie wheelbarrow. Total value of the theft has been estimated at $700.

Fraud alert
The Chatham-Kent Police would like to remind citizens that scammers continue to call, email and text people in an effort to defraud them of their hard-earned money.
This week, police responded to a fraud complaint reported by a local bank. Through investigation, police learned that earlier this year, a Chatham woman received an error message on her computer, from whom she believed was Microsoft. The woman made contact with a man, purporting to be from Microsoft in an effort to fix her computer. In the process of ‘fixing’ her computer, the man advised the woman that he ‘accidently’ deposited cash into her account.
The man then instructed the woman to repay the money in cash increments of $3000 to $5000. In total, the woman was defrauded of over $38,000 as the man would attend her home to retrieve the cash.
The suspect is described as a non-white man with a dark complexion, mid to late 20’s, approximately 6-feet tall with black wavy hair. The man was always wearing a mask and was last seen driving a grey SUV.

The key to protecting yourself from a fraud or scam is to first of all recognize it. Remember that scammers use intimidation tactics and want to pressure you into providing information and making decision quickly. If you get a suspicious call, don’t panic. Take the time to do your research before taking any action.
